Alligator Skin Box: memoirs of a nomad
Hale Ekinci is an international artist from Turkey, residing in Chicago (USA). As an interdisciplinary artist, she works with various mediums including mixed-media drawing, video, creative writing and sound to depict her surrealist/absurd stories based on Turkish culture and childhood memories.
Alligator Skin Box: memoirs of a young nomad is the visual experimentation on transforming written texts into intertextual motion works. My objective with this project is to use visual and sonic means to translate distilled versions of the stories I wrote, in order to find insinuated and hidden interpretations of/in these stories and their relations.

Hello all, I’m working on the booklet of short stories that I will give out during the exhibition. I am trying to decide on the final design for the cover, and am stuck between these two designs. Any opinions?

Today was the first day of installing the Interdisciplinary Arts MFA Thesis Exhibition. After 6 hours of work, I finally finished installing the first suitcase with the monitor and speakers inside. The result is a success!!! Two more to go, and two more suitcases (vintage jewelry cases) with booklets.

YES we did it! James and I cut up the suitcase today, and made an amazing vintage suitcase encasement for a screen.
One step closer to the thesis show.

GENERAL
- make all narration just my voice
- showing things before I say them is good
- fix green screen flickering
- experiment with the subtitle placement

MERRY GO ROUND - BULGUR BALLS
- make balls pop out then fall slowly—too fast right now
- his knocking on tree looks fake
- beginning fade in—make it slower
- layers can be dissolved instead of straight cuts/or try shadows
BUTCHER RULES
- fix brain on shelf scene
- cut quicker at the end when we both land on balcony
- take out shadow on rope and foot (looks like a halo)
- move clouds
- you can assemble frames layer by layer (i.e. the shelf scene)
TREE TRUNK HOUSE
- layer something behind women, maybe clouds? They don’t have to be this real
- add Turkish delights reason for vomiting in subtitles
- try luma key on a copied layer of closed up lead to make shadow effect
- maybe the wrapped body could have sofra bezi
- put paper texture come through laurie

I just met with Arti and looked at my first version of Lead Lizard—the final video. Here are some of the comments I will consider:
- Change the footage a bit instead of using the exact scene: maybe overlay different parts i.e. Woman on a cloud, elephant on the window etc.
- Why no Alligator footage?
- Opening and closing are good
- Change of color??
Things to do additionally:
- Experiment with text placement for subtitles
- Add subtitles to TTH and LL
- Try out suitcases (meet with Mat on Tuesday)
